IAM UK SW Branch Newsletter

The IAM SW Branch would like to wish you a Happy New Year and we hope that you were all able to enjoy the festive break. It has been over a year now since the branch started to stand up and I think we have come a long way in a relatively short amount of time since the inaugural event in April last year.

In summary, we have run two events, secured the University of Bristol as a home location and been supported by BMT, an IAM Patron, to ensure we were fed and watered at each event! We have formed a committee that has developed a challenging set of tasks that will see us deliver multiple events in our second year and develop relationships with organisations such as Defence, the Institute of Water, Pipeline Industries Guild and Association for Project Managers.

We very much look forward to seeing you at our future events and to your active involvement in the development and growth of the branch.

2019 Events Recap

On the 10th October we were delighted to welcome Pierre-Michael Delamotte (Atkins, ADS&T) & Kevin Rayment (Network Rail) to present at our second IAM SW Branch meeting.

Pierre talked about the adoption of ISO 55000 in the Ministry of Defence (MoD), presenting the state of play of ISO 55000 within Defence, outside of the UK (Australia, USA, Canada & France) and in the UK. He took us through the current opportunities for adopting this standard in the MoD within the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) and the Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S); Pierre concluded with a discussion on whether now is the right time for MoD to consider its adoption of ISO 55000.

Kevin Rayment from Network Rail presented on Design for Reliability (DFR) at Network Rail (NR) and how it has been applied to new products. Kevin explained the reasons driving DFR at NR which had been identified from NR’s experience of fixing many issues. These reasons include insufficient use of learning from past issues, insufficient use of best practice methods to design in reliability, not fully understanding the cause of an issue being fixed and product testing not fully reflecting the range of conditions seen on the railway. Kevin took us through an example of how the process works in the virtual, off live and on live environments.

The IAM Asset Management Conference was held in London last November, with the Annual Dinner and IAM Global Awards 2019 ceremony held on the evening of the first day. Two of the stand-out presentations were from Tim Kersley (Network Rail) ably supported by Nicola Walsh (Northumbrian Water) and Richard Wakelen (Canal and Rivers Trust). Tim & Nicola’s presentation was on 'Digital Twins - learning from case studies' and provided detailed information on how companies are using digital twins in asset management. Richard’s presentation was on 'Whaley Bridge - the story so far' and went through the high profile near failure of the Toddbrook Dam.

You can see some of the work on Digital Twins produced by the IAM Patrons UK Group in an upcoming edition of Assets magazine.
